Coffee Time
Problem solving in teams
Coffee Time is a challenging exercise designed to improve problem solving and cooperation in groups. Each member of the group is given unique information which, when shared, will help them to answer the question, “When is Coffee Time?”. Information can be shared verbally but not visually.
No individual in the group has enough information to be sure what the task really involves or how it may be done. The group must develop a common understanding about the nature of the task and the objective.
This exercise requires full participation from all group members.
Coffee Time is an excellent exercise to help team members understand the cooperative process, work more effectively in groups and to reach solutions to complex problems.
Coffee Time will help participants to:
- understand how to work cooperatively
- work more effectively in groups
- improve their management and leadership style
- reach better solutions to problems

- A brief introduction to problem solving in teams
- The Coffee Time exercise
- Debriefing and a short discussion of the main themes
This exercise can stand on its own as a short training event or can form part of a longer session focussing on problem solving and communication within teams. It can also form part of a full team development program.
Please note: Teams looking for a wine related exercise should look at Corkscrew. It is the same exercise as Coffee Time but with a ‘wine’ theme.
